A good example of a small Oak Coffer dating from the mid 17th Century. It has a traditional 6-plank construction with a flat top and moulded bottom edge. The front is decorated with simple primitive arched carvings and attractive ebonised borders.
The lid opens on its original blacksmith hinges to reveal a plain interior.
It is in good original condition and has developed a beautiful rich patina. It has avoided ever being overcarved and is a very pretty well balanced example. There are some signs of age and use and some marks on the top but nothing detrimental or untoward. An old split in the lid has been strengthened with some metal and wooden brackets and there is an old chip on one back leg but the whole piece is strong and sturdy.
