A nice example of a small English oak coffer dating from the early to mid 18th Century. It is a traditional planked nailed construction standing on V cut-out end boards with a brass escutcheon and key cover. It has large blacksmith-made hinges wrapping over the lid which opens to a plain interior.
The coffer is in good condition for its age and has developed a lovely rich patina and good dark colour. It is generally clean and tidy inside and is strong and sturdy. There are signs of age and use, some knocks and marks and some shrinkage splits in the top but nothing detrimental or untoward. It does not come with a key. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
