'Pope Joan' Game
Circa 1830
Very fine example of a hand made Pope Joan game made from wood and hand painted in beautiful Chinoiserie decoration. 'Pope Joan' is a card game that dates back as early as the 1700s. This segmented turntable holds the players' counters or 'bets'. It has 8 segments, 3 of which are labelled "Game, Matrimony and Intrigue" in accordance with the game's rules and the middle section is lidded.
Approximate Measurements :
Diameter : 12" (30cm)
Height : 2 1/2" (6cm)
The game is in excellent original condition with the original hand painted decoration still bright and vibrant. It has been well used over the years and very well looked after but of course there are patches of paint flaking and some general small scuffs here and there picked up through use. There is no damage to report and nothing that detracts from its overall look which is one of age and history. The top rotates well on its base. Please note that the lid for the middle section is slightly warped and not a perfect fit - it takes a little jiggling to get it to fit - however it is without doubt the original lid.
It is a very rare piece and the most beautiful and original example I have seen. Please have a good look at the photos for the best description and if you have any questions please ask.
