Reynolds & Co Surveyor's Level
In original box
Beautiful original theodolite manufactured in the late 19th Century. The Theodolite itself is made from lacquered brass with brass fittings. It is engraved "Reynolds & Co. Birmingham". It is a high quality instrument with an extendable telescope and two spirit levels. The Theodolite sits atop an adjustable mount which could screw onto the top of a tripod.
It comes in its original fitted wooden box which has a lovely aged patina. The box is in good order and displays well however there are some old knocks and general signs of age and use. The box has two metal latches to keep the lid closed but I do not have a key and it is missing it's brass escutcheon around the keyhole. There is a pencil name and date in the lid of the box which reads "J.Owen Jones. 1884".
It truly is a stunning instrument and is in excellent condition overall. It has been used but has clearly been well looked after. The instrument and brass fittings have been lightly cleaned and the parts lubricated. Over time the lacquer has worn slightly and the brass has tarnished and there are some general marks and light scratches but nothing detrimental. The lenses are undamaged and the optics are generally clear with just some small specks on the lenses. The clarity and range is excellent and the cross-lines are present. Although in good working order it is really being sold as a collectable piece rather than an accurate scientific instrument.
