Antique Marine Sextant
by Keohan, London
Fine example of an early 20th Century Sextant. The body of the sextant is black with a silvered and brass scale, signed Keohan. East Smithfield, London. It comes with its original telescope lens plus four additional scopes, sunshades, mirrors and movable scale reader arm.
The sextant is in its original fitted wooden case with sections to hold the lenses and other accessories. It has a brass carrying handle and brass closing latches. One of the hooks for the latch has been replaced with a small screw but still closes well. The inside lid of the box is painted black and the base lined with a dark green felt.
Approximate Measurements :
Box : 10 1/2" x 11 1/2" x 5"
Diameter of Sextant : 9 1/2"
The sextant is in good condition for its age. It has been lightly cleaned and displays very well. All parts move as they should and there are no major damages. There are signs of age and use and tarnishing on the metal parts and some wear to the paint but nothing detrimental. The box is not without some small knocks and some minor age-related splits but overall it has a nice aged patina. I have not tested the accuracy of the sextant and it is being sold as a collectors item rather than a working scientific instrument.
