Victorian Walnut Writing Desk
Good example of an elegant late 19th Century writing desk of small proportions. The desk is made of solid mahogany with a walnut veneer and stands on turned legs terminating in the original brass and ceramic castors. The desk has an inset green leather surface with gold tooling which has worn beautifully over the years. On the top of the desk is an arragement of 2 drawers either side of a large lift up compartment surmounted by the original turned wood gallery. Below the desk are two short frieze drawers with the original brass drop handles.
The whole piece is in good condition and is clean and tidy throughout, retaining its original castors and brass plate handles. The drawers run well and the desk has been thoroughly cleaned and polished. It must have seen a lot of sunlight over the years as it has bleached to create a lovely all-over faded patina. The stationery compartment would have been sectioned inside as a letter rack but these have been removed at some time. There are some minor signs of wear and age but nothing detrimental and the desk displays beautifully and is ready for use.
