Antique Apothecary Box
Stunning example of an early 19th Century mahogany apothecary case, complete with most of its original contents. The box itself is made from mahogany with a military style inset brass carrying handle, brass escutcheon and matching inset brass handle on the drawer.
Inside the top of the box it is sectioned to hold the various bottles and has a velvet lined lid to keep them safe in transport. There are 14 sections in total and the box comes with 11 original glass bottles, all with their original ground glass stoppers and many with their original paper labels. There is also a further smaller bottle in one of the gaps. There is a brass rod holding the drawer below closed. This drawer holds a further 5 original bottles and a set of scales and weights. The top tray lifts out of the drawer to reveal even more equipment below including the original glass pestle and mortar for mixing ingredients, a glass measuring beaker and two glass pots with metal lids - truly everything a travelling doctor would have needed in the 19th century!

Width : 9" (23cm)
Depth : 7" (18cm)
Overall the condition of the box and contents are superb. It is missing 3 of the top glass bottles however the set displays beautifully and is certainly one of the most complete I've come across.
The mahogany box is strong and sturdy with a beautiful aged patina. There are general minor signs of age and use but no major damages. It has been re-polished and revived and had some old splits repaired and the brass parts polished. I do not have a key for the box. Inside it is generally clean and tidy and the partitions are sturdy and in good condition with most of the original velvet lining remaining.
There is no major damage to any of the glass bottles apart from one stopper is broken. There are some nibbles and small chips around the tops of some of them but nothing serious and many bottles have retained their original paper labels. Any remaining liquids will have to be removed for posting unless buyer collects. The contents of the drawer are also in excellent condition with just a small chip on the rim of the glass measuring beaker.
This really is a fantastic set, not to be missed. It is so rare to find something so complete and original. Each element has been cleaned and it is ready for display. The best description certainly comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions please ask.
