B.D.H Capillator Compensating Cell
Department of Botany, Westfield College, Oxford
Superb example of a pH analysis set dating from the early to mid 20th Century. It is a complete travelling kit for field work and comes in a cleverly fitted case with carry handle. The lid opens which then enables the side flaps to fold out. Included in the set are two glass corked bottles for distilled water, 8 pH indicator bottles with original paper labels, 7 small watch glasses, a pipette and many capillary tubes in a larger corked test tube. There are also a compensating cell and 6 capillator cards with capillary scales to read the results.
The set comes with the original paper instructions, produced by The British Drug House. There is a paper label on the case which reads "Dept. of Botany. Westfield College....High St. Oxford" which gives the set an interesting provenance. There are some labels on the capillators which states they were "checked and serviced by B.D.H' in 1941 and then again in 1949.
The whole set is in excellent condition for its age and displays very well. There is one watch glass missing and the rubber end of the pipette has hardened. The paper instructions have got a sellotape repair on the reverse. There are general signs of age and use and some wear on the case but nothing major.
