Large Ceylonese Quill Box

circa 1900

Lovely original quill box with 9 internal compartments and a lift out tray. Perfect for jewellery / trinkets.

The structure of the box itself is an ebonised wood, decorated with small white circles of bone. The outer of the box is decorated with porcupine quills in different black and white patterns. Inside the lid of the box is a floral decorated panel edged with a border of deep blue velvet type material. There are 9 compartments with lift off lids, each also decorated with bone circles. The compartments are in a lift out tray which pulls out with two small brass ring handles. There is a lock on the box with a small brass escutcheon but there is no key.

Measurements :

Width : 11"

Depth : 8"

Height : 4 1/2"

The box in general is in good condition. It is structurally sound with only a few white circles missing here and there. There is a small hole in the blue velvet in the lid which has been darkened to blend in. All the quills are present on the outer of the box, there is just one quill which has broken and has an end missing (see photo). It is worth noting that one row of the quill pattern on the top of the box is partly not in sequence although it doesn't stand out.

Please have a good look at all the photos for the best description and if you have any questions please ask.
