Antique Apothecary Scales
By W.T Avery
Beautiful set of antique balance beam scales contained within their original mahogany box with a set of weights. They date from the late 19th Century and were manufactured by W.T Avery.
The scales and pans are made of brass with a metal crossbeam. The base of the pans are stamped with the Avery logo. They screw into the top of the box for easy use and disassemble to pack away for easy transport.
There are various old weights that come with the scales that measure in grains and ounces that would have allowed chemists to measure to a very fine degree of accuracy.
Box : 12" x 7" x 3"
Pan Diameter : 4 1/2" (11cm)
Height when assembled : 16" (41cm)
Beam length : 9" (23cm)
The whole set is in good original condition. It is a very well made high quality set by a renowned maker that displays beautifully. The box is not without some chips and knocks and signs of wear but this all adds to its gorgeous aged patina. The pans have some small dents and signs of wear but nothing major. It has been lightly cleaned and is ready for display with its original aged look preserved. I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the scales and they are being sold as a decorative item rather than a working scientific instrument.
Please have a good look at the photos and if you have any questions at all please ask.
