Owl Pottery Oil Lamp
Lovely pottery oil lamp modelled as an owl perched on a naturalistic base, with inset glass eyes. It dates from the late 19th century and is likely to be continental, possibly German or French. It is unmarked and I do not know the maker but it is similar in design to Sitzendorf or Whitman & Roth.
On top of the owl's head is a brass oil lamp collar with screw thread. It has a small round brass burner with circular central wick. The wick turner is labelled "manufactured in Germany". It has a brass shade carrier on which an opaline white glass shade sits.
I have not tested the oil lamp and it is being sold as seen and primarily as a decorative item.
It is in good condition for its age with no major damage. The glazing is crazed and there is a small chip on one toe (see photo) and a small chip on one of the raised feathers on the side (see photo). There is a line of crazing a little darker which looks like it may be a small hairline crack below the wing but it is hard to tell (see photo). The lamp displays beautifully and looks adorable and is certainly a lovely piece.
