Antique Campaign Mahogany Writing Slope
with Secret Drawers
A superb large antique writing slope made of solid mahogany dating from the early to mid 19th century. It has recessed brass military style handles, brass corners, brass banding, brass escutcheon and matching brass cartouche. It comes with a working key. Inside, the box is fitted with a good quality green leather writing surface with gilt tooled edge and it comes with a glass inkwell. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood near the pen tray is pushed. There is also a long drawer on the side of the box which pulls out when a brass pin is lifted.
It is a very impressive box and is in excellent condition for its age. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and it displays very well inside and out. There are no major damages to the wood exterior, just a small chip by one back hinge. There are some small knocks and minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental and the patination is beautiful. The interior lock to the leather surface is missing and has been replaced with a brass plaque but the outside lock is present and working with a key.
