Camphorwood Sea Chest
A superb early 19th century seaman's chest made from Camphorwood. It is very well made from solid slabs of camphor, joined with dove tail joints. It has angled sides for stablity at sea and has brackets on the side which would have had rope handles attached. It has its original internal candle box and original working lock and key which holds a special trick - the lock has an alarmed bell which rings when the key is turned which would have prevented anybody stealing your belongings on board the ship!
It is in very good condition for its age and has a nice aged and worn patina but it strong and sturdy. There are signs of age and use, some small knocks and surface marks and some small repairs here and there but noting detrimental. The hinges have been repaired at some point but are strong and sturdy now. The box is generally clean and tidy inside and it displays beautifully.
