Antique Zanzibar Dowry Chest
Superb example of a late 18th / early 19th century Zanzibar style chest, originally brought back by the previous owner from Yemen. It is made from Padouk wood and is incredibly heavy. The quality is outstanding and it is decorated all over with hand made ornate brass corner pieces, flower shaped studs and pierced brass corner plates. It has strong brass carrying handles on the sides and a large hinged latch on the front. The hinged lid opens to the large storage area and also reveals an additional candle box within. The chest has four drawers along the bottom, each adorned with brass work and with two brass handles.
It is in very good condition throughout and is strong and sturdy with a beautiful rich patina. There are signs of age and use, some marks and knocks, small chips and a minor age related split along the back and one side panel. Some of the brass flower studs are missing and there are some other minor losses but no large brass pieces are missing. The hinges are strong and the interior is clean and tidy.
