Pitcairn Island Flying Fish
by Fred Christian
Fantastic example of an authentic mid 20th Century Flying Fish carved by the inhabitants on the famous Pitcairn Island. It is excellent quality and one of the best examples I've seen. It is particularly large and the carving particularly detailed. The fish's body is slightly curved with large carved wings and an open mouth full of teeth. The fish stands on a turned column and rectangular base which is dated 'March 23 1955'. The wings are carved with the inscription "Pitcairn Island Home of The Mutineers of The Bounty. Made by Fred Christian, Great-Great Grandson of Fletcher Christian of The Bounty".
The fish has been very finely carved but still retains a naive charm about it. He is in excellent condition. There are some small surface knocks and natural wear to the wood but there are no damages and he has a lovely patina. One wing is ever so slightly loose but I haven't attempted to tighten the screw. He displays beautifully.
