Extending Ember Tongs

19th Century

Fantastic set of ember tongs with an extending concertina mechanism. I believe they date from the late 1800s and were used to take embers from the fireplace to light candles and the like. They are hand made, likely by the local blacksmith. They look to be made of simple burnished steel. They are superbly designed and so precisely made that the end grips meet in the correct position for gripping when fully extended.

Closed, they measure just 6" long but fully extended they measure a huge 26" long.

They have been lightly cleaned and oiled and are in good working order. There are some signs of wear - light scratches and marks - and small patches of rust but the rivets are all in good order and the mechanism is smooth.

A very unusual item and particularly rare to find in such good condition.
