Antique Leitz Microscope

Circa 1920s

Fine example of a high quality microscope complete with three objective lenses and three eyepiece lenses. The microscope parts are made of brass and it sits on a black base. It has an adjustable and extendable eyepiece tube, rack and pinion main focus, additional fine focus and a triple revolving nosepiece. It has a square stage with two slide clips. Below the staging is a mirror to focus the light and a filter with interchangeable pinhole lenses that restrict the amount of light.

The front of the tube is marked with the maker and serial number "E.Leitz.Wetzlar. No 95481". This also matches the serial number stamped on the door of the box. There are three brass objective lenses. Two are stamped 3 and 7 and signed E.Leitz Wetzlar and come with matching lens holders. The third is marked 'Homog.0el.Immersion 1/12'. The eyepiece lenses differ in strength and are numbered 1, 3 and 5 and are also all signed E.Leitz.

The microscope appears to be in good working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides. I've attached a collage of photos looking down the microscope using a combination of the different lenses. The microscope was easy to focus with both the main focus and the fine focus, and produced a clear and crisp image. I'm sure the lenses would benefit from a light clean and although in working order it is really being sold as a decorative / collectors item rather than an accurate scientific instrument.

The microscope comes in a fitted wooden case with brass carrying handle. There are sections surrounding the microscope that slide out to hold the eyepiece lenses and objective lenses as well as a sliding box for storing slides or other accessories. The filter also fits in a section on the side too.

The microscope measures approximately 13" tall when set up. The box is 13" high by 6 1/2" wide and 7 1/2" deep.

Overall it is in good condition but it has been used and will have normal signs of wear. The brass has been cleaned and polished to a high standard and it displays very nicely. There are some small marks and minor scratches on the base but nothing detrimental. The box is not without some scratches and knocks / signs of age and wear but nothing major and it comes with its original working key.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask.
