Antique 'Avery' Apothecary Scales
Beautiful set of antique balance beam scales dating from the late 19th Century. They are contained within their original mahogany box and come with various brass weights. The pans and lever are marked for 'Avery'.
The scales are made of brass with a brass crossbeam which is marked "Class B. To Weigh 2oz". Both brass weighing pans are suspended by brass chains. The scales screw into the top of the box and break down so the beam and pans pack away into the drawer.
There are various old weights that come with the scales that measure in Troy ounces and would have allowed chemists to measure to a very fine degree of accuracy. Some of the weights have tarnished over time.
Box : 10" x 5" x 2"
Pan Diameter : 3" (8cm)
Height : 14" (36cm)
Beam length : 8" (20cm)
The whole set is in good original condition. It is a well made high quality set that displays beautifully. The box is superb quality with a lovely aged patina and just a few minor knocks and scuffs. The scales have been lightly cleaned and polished and are ready for display, having had a new pin made. There are minor signs of use and the end of the metal hook holding up the chains of one pan has broken slightly but it doesn't affect the scales.
I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the scales and they are being sold as a decorative collectors item rather than a working scientific instrument. Please have a good look at the photos for the best description and if you have any questions at all please ask.
