Tactical Exercise Blocks'
Superb example of an early 19th Century 'Kriegsspiel' entitled 'Tactical Exercise Blocks'. This would have been used by military personnel to plan and practice combat exercises and is the early predecessor to the modern War Games played today.
The set comes in its original wooden box with paper label to the top which reads "Caution. Hold the box level when opening. Replace the trays gently. Tactical Exercise Blocks". Below the lid are more paper labels describing an Inventory of the Contents of the box.
There are two identical trays of blocks, one in red and one in blue. They are divided up into various different sections including Cavalry, Infantry, Artillery and Transport and each individual piece is cut from wood and has an applied paper label on it to indicate exactly what it is. Below the trays are two wooden scale rulers showing '100 yards to 1 inch', a brass compass and two wooden boxes containing further pieces including small lead balls for Infantry Scouts & Sentries.
Box Length : 9 1/2" (24cm)
Height : 2" (5cm)
Depth : 4" (10cm)
The set is in good condition for its age and is fairly complete. I have not gone through every piece but by looking at the trays I'd say the set was about 90% complete. The blue tray looks pretty much complete and there are some obvious missing bits on the red tray. By having the inventory as reference it will be possible to replace any missing pieces if you wanted to. The box is in good condition with some general signs of age and minor splits at the back but nothing detrimental. One brass eye hole on the catch has been replaced at some time. Overall the set displays very well.
