Victorian Rosewood Writing Slope
Lovely antique writing slope in beautiful Rosewood with Mother of Pearl Inlay and matching escutcheons. The large central escutcheon is not engraved so could be engraved with a message or initials of your choice.
The top section of the box lifts up to reveal two glass inkwells, a removable pen tray, a lidded compartment and two further compartments. The bottom part of the box folds down to provide a writing surface which is covered with maroon coloured velvet with an intricate tooled border. The top part of the surface lifts up to provide storage for paper etc and there is a small leather tab to help lift it up.
It is in excellent condition for its age with a beautiful patina. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and displays beautifully inside and out. There is no major damage to the wood exterior and the mother of pearl inlay is all present with just a very small section slightly lifting (see photo). The box comes with a working key however the wood has shrunk slightly over time and the lock does not reach to lock the box.
Inside there is some light wear to the velvet writing surface, it is marked and lightly stained in places and has split across the crease but it has a lovely worn authentic look and is still perfectly usable. The glass inkwells are slightly different and one does not have a lid.
